Gandhi not such a saint

Mahatma Gandhi is famous for instituting mass non-violent protests against the British empire. But what were his values and goals for Indian society? Be prepared to be shocked. Ghandi was a racist who could not stand association with black South Africans, he promoted the caste system for India, and patronised the ‘untouchables’ by writing long essays promoting the spiritual value of cleaning shit — while trapping them in that role forever. It seems Gandhi just “ain’t what he used to be…”, well, what Hollywood would make of him anyway.

Please listen to The Caste System in India by the ABC’s Big Ideas. 54 minutes.
