Description

“IS DEMOCRATIC GLOBAL GOVERNANCE POSSIBLE?”

IGPSGlogoWCAAlogo

Friday June 15th, 8.45 am – 1 pm

Old Geology Lecture Theatre

University of Sydney

Our global village is confronted by many difficult problems which the present UN system has so far failed to solve, such as dealing with climate change, eliminating nuclear weapons, and reducing global poverty, war and genocide. How much easier it would be if we had a genuine global parliament where these issues could be discussed, rational solutions could be found and then put into practice by means of binding international laws. But is that possible? This symposium will discuss the need for democratic global governance and the various pathways by which it might be achieved, including the recent campaign for a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly.

Featured speaker

SENATOR BOB BROWN

Bob Brown is a household name as the former leader of the Greens party in the federal parliament. He has been a powerful advocate for a global parliament, particularly in order to deal with the problem of climate change and other threats to the global environment.
